Reconnaissance seestreitkraft Parachute & Combat Diver QualifiedReconnaissance Marine Parachute & Combat Diver QualifiedMilitary Occupational Specialty codes, more commonly referred to as MOS codes, are a series of numbers that follow the MOS prefix to identify the field in which a Marine as well as the specific job he holds within that field. MOS 0326 identifies the Reconnaissance Marine Parachute and Combat Diver Qualified in the infantry field, the primary fighting force within the Marine Corps. This MOS was titled Reconnaissance Man prior to June 24, 2016, when, following an exhaustive review by the Secretary of the Navy in cooperation with the Commandant of the Marine Corps, many MOS titles were changed to avoid gender-specific terms. The decision was part of an effort to fully integrate female Marines and other female service members into the armed forces. Recon Marines are part of the Reconnaissance Battalions. This MOS was previously MOS 8654. It is an NMOS, a necessary MOS, indicating that this is a secondary, additional MOS for the Marine who holds the title. The position can only be filled by a Marine who qualifies through unternehmensverbund another specific MOS, and the distinction is that he or she is qualified as both a parachutist and diver. How To Cultivate A Diverse STEM Workforce

How To Cultivate A Diverse STEM WorkforceHow To Cultivate A Diverse STEM WorkforceHow To Cultivate A Diverse STEM WorkforceIn recognition of the value that a diverse workforce brings to business today, asked Harris Interactive a leading market research firm to conduct research that examines the importance of diversity recruiting in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematical (STEM) professions.Respondents tothe 2012 survey, Diversity Recruiting in STEM Occupations, found that traditional recruitment activities work well for recruiting diverse candidates in STEM fields.Survey respondents answered the question, What are some strategies to meeting this challenge recruiting diverse STEM candidates that have worked well?Respondents found traditional recruitment practices are the front line of diversity recruiting. The next three most effective techniques are employee outreach programs (especially those focused on working with diverse current employees) and partnerships with agenci es/organizations followed by schools/universities.According to the report, all the tools of recruiting budgeting, job descriptions, planning, search, sourcing, assessment, interviewing, onboarding, etc. must be assessed as to whether they are attracting a diverse audience.A simple example of this would be assessing which advertising venues are actually encountered by the broadest possible audiences one pitfall of advertising across a broad set of channels is that they might overlap so much that the glaubenszeugnis is, in effect, simply reaching the same audience over and over. Adjusting the channel mix to reach target audiences would be appropriate.Executives assert that verbal support at the top of the organization is necessary but insufficient. Diversity is a mainstream value, woven into daily work life in various forms, such as airing different points of view or soliciting input from a wide range of employees.Download the Full Report Diversity Recruiting in STEM Occupations Dow nload the Executive Summary Diversity Recruiting in STEM Occupations Findings from the studyInfographic Effective Diversity Recruiting in STEM OccupationsThe Competitive Benefits of STEMDiversityHow Companies Cultivate a Diverse STEM WorkforceRecruiting STEM Talent for your Small CompanyRecruiters The Crucial Link in STEM Diversity HiringSeven Tactics for Successful STEM Diversity RecruitingSurvey Methodologyand Harris Interactive conducted an online survey in August 2011 in which more than 400 Chief Diversity Officers or SVPs of Human Resources participated from a representative group of companies involved with architecture and engineering, computer and mathematics or life, physical and social science disciplines. WorkSimple Uses Social Network Streaming to Help Employees Manage Goals

WorkSimple Uses Social Network Streaming to Help Employees Manage Goals WorkSimple Uses Social Network Streaming to Help Employees Manage Goals Four out of five U.S. workers are dissatisfied with performance reviews because they believe the reviews do not accurately reflect their work. WorkSimple, taking this into consideration, has utilized social technology to allow co-workers to focus on goals, interact, and follow people in ways that are familiar to them. According to CTO and co-founder of WorkSimple, Ben Moore, “Employees are already picking their CRM and they are choosing Salesforce. In the future, employees will also choose their performance management platform, and it won’t be the larger HR/talent management vendors out there today. They will select an employee-centered platform like WorkSimple.” Like Facebook and LinkedIn, WorkSimple engages the workforce in a familiar way, implementing goals and information like updates, comments, feedback, and recognition to the employee through daily notifications. WorkSimple increases performance management and through an updated information stream, helps workers keep goals and performance in sight, also allowing for feedback. CEO, Morgan Norman, states that, “Organizations are quickly realizing that WorkSimple is enabling them to focus on innovation and creating business value in a way that traditional HR software doesn’t do.” For more information, please visit http://getworksimple.com.

Cant kick a bad habit Youre probably doing it wrong

Can’t kick a bad habit You’re probably doing it wrong Can’t kick a bad habit You’re probably doing it wrong I had just finished giving a speech on building habits when a woman in the audience exclaimed, “You teach how to create habits, but that’s not my problem. I’m fat!” The frustration in her voice echoed throughout the room. “My problem is stopping bad habits. That’s why I’m fat. Where does that leave me?”

Army Commissioned Officer Career Path

Army Commissioned Officer Career Path Army Commissioned Officer Career Path As with any civilian job, Army officers must meet specified criteria in order to be eligible for the promotion. The Department of Defense calls for a given number of officers based on manpower needs and skill requirements  for each category and grade. So what is the career path for an Army officer? Here are some of the criteria and requirements that need to be met to be considered for a promotion. Army Officer Candidate School This is a 12-week program for  ?enlisted soldiers, civilian college graduates and direct commission candidates (which include doctors and chaplains). Those who complete Officer Candidate School  (OCS) become commissioned officers upon graduation and must serve at least three years on active duty following graduation. The Armys Officer Candidate School is located at Fort Benning in Georgia. Roughly 70 percent of enlisted candidates and 60 percent of those accepted overall successfully complete Army OCS. Time in Grade and Time in Service Two of the biggest factors influencing officer promotions are the time in service (TIS) and time in grade (TIG). Time in service is the total time in which someone is in the Army. An officer must spend a given amount of time in each grade prior to advancement to the next and he or she typically cant skip grades. Time in grade refers to the number of months or years in which an officer serves in a given rank (lieutenant, major, general, etc.) The minimum TIG requirements for promotion to the next higher grade is  shown in the table below. Promote to: Time in Service Time in Grade Promotion Opportunity (DODI) First lieutenant/O2 18 months 18 months Fully qualified Captain/O3 4 years plus 1 year 2 years Best qualified (90 percent) Major/O4 10 years +/- 1year 3 years Best qualified (80 percent) Lieutenant Colonel/O5 16 years +/- 1 year 3 years Best qualified (70 percent) Colonel/O6 22 years +/- 1 year 3 years Best qualified (50 percent) Army Officer Categories Officers in the same competitive category will compete among themselves for promotions.  Changes in authorizations, losses, and promotions to the next higher grade will create variations in both the TIS and TIG when these promotions may occur.     The promotion timings  are expressed in terms of the years of Active Federal Commissioned Service at which promotion occurs. The promotion opportunity is the percentage of total selects over the eligible in-the-zone population. Different Types of  Promotion Opportunities There are three promotion opportunities in all branches of the U.S. military:  Below-the-Zone, In-the-Zone, and Above-the-Zone. Below-the-Zone only applies for promotion to the rank of O-4 (Major)  to O-6 (Colonel). One year before they would be eligible for In-the-Zone consideration, about 10 percent of those recommended can be promoted Below-the-Zone. Most promotions occur In-the-Zone. The selection rate for Above-the-Zone is only about 3 percent. Two other significant factors in officers promotions are fitness reports and the nature of their current and past assignments. A poor fitness report may mean being passed over for promotion. An officer whose previous assignments didnt have a significant degree of responsibility may also be passed over. Promotions to O-7 Brigadier General and Above For promotions beyond O-6,  Army officers typically have to complete a full tour in a joint duty assignment with the Marines, Navy, Coast Guard or Air Force. Grade Army Officer O-7 Brigadier General O-8 Major General O-9 Lieutenant General O-10 General And just like the other branches of the service, the mandatory retirement age for Army officers is 62 (which can be waived to 64 in some circumstances).

Stop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or less

Stop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or less Stop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or less A couple of years ago, I wrote down a goal to write and publish a book to help students build their self-confidence, stop procrastinating and maximize their examination grades.I estimated that writing this book would take approximately 3 months with a final word count between 30,000 to 50,000 words. On several occasions, I remember sitting down with my laptop ready to start writing, but never actually getting started.I was paralyzed with anxiety and fear that my work wouldn’t be good enough. So instead of writing, I wasted precious time ‘researching’ new content for the book. This went on for several months until I was sick and tired of procrastinating on publishing my book. Luckily, I accidentally stumbled upon a powerful strategy that helped me destroy my procrastination and finish my book. How to stop procrastinating using the “2-minute  rule”I quickly realized that my obsession with being perfect and on the final result of a published book was causing my anxiety and procra stination. So one day, as I was staring at my laptop I asked myself a simple but powerful question:“What can I do right now?”And so, I simply wrote one sentence. No big deal right? Wrong!Straight away I experienced relief from my anxiety and a short boost of self-confidence.I wrote the next sentence. And the next. And so on.By the end of that full day, I had completed a 5,000-word rough draft.Within 30 days I had completed the entire draft of the book. The best part about this was that I only focused on doing something small every day and the final result was simply a by-product.By shifting our focus from the intimidating end result to simply getting started today, we can overcome the mental roadblocks that cause procrastination.“The Secret Of Getting Ahead Is Getting Started”  â€"  Mark TwainHow to use the “2-minute rule”This is where the ‘2-minute rule’ can be an effective strategy to stop procrastinating and take action towards your goals. This technique highlighted w ithin David Allen’s bestselling book, ‘Getting Thing’s Done’ (audiobook), simply suggests that if a task takes less than 2-minutes then just do it now. (1)This could be as simple as taking out the trash after cooking, replying an email to a colleague straight away or even doing your laundry as soon as you get home from work. This way you save yourself time that would have been wasted on reviewing the same task on your to-do list over and over again for weeks.Plus, you reduce anxiety and boost your self-confidence by getting more things done.If a goal takes more than two minutes, break it down into steps that take 2 minutes or less to complete i.e putting on your running shoes, writing one sentence in your draft. You can easily use this technique for everyday tasks, but we can drive this to the next level to help you stick to good habits over the long run.For example, let’s say you want to eat healthier and lose 10 kg over the next couple of months. Rather than focusing on th e end result of your goal, you could simply ask yourself this question:‘What can I do in just 2 minutes to get started on my goal?‘You could then do any of the following: Eat an apple Do 10 push-ups and sit-ups Go for a short walk And so on The general idea here is that by simply getting started you will be more inclined to take more action and build the new habit. The same principle applies to any other goal.Want to publish a report or a book? simply write one sentence a day.Want to read 20 books this year? read one page of a book a day.Want to eat healthy and lose 10 pounds of weight? eat one apple a day.Want to go to the gym 3 times a week? put on your running shoes and leave your house.By breaking down your massive goal into small ‘2-minute’ chunks, you can build momentum and trick your mind to taking more action than you initially set out to do in 2 minutes.Your turnHere’s a simple challenge for you, simply grab a piece of paper and divide the page into two columns. On one column just write down all the important goals or tasks that you’ve been procrastinating on. On another column break down these goals into a productive action you can take in the next 2 minutes. Go ahead and simply just take that first step. Getting Back at Employers Who Snub You

Getting Back at Employers Who Snub You Getting Back at Employers Who Snub You Getting Back at Employers Who Snub You Most of us have gone through this or a similar experience: You follow up on your resume submission, the employer says they'll definitely get back to you within a few days, but you never hear back. Then they ignore your follow-up calls and emails until, utterly frustrated, you give up and make a mental note to not apply to the company again. Or maybe you got to an interview that ended on an enthusiastic note when they called you a strong candidate and said they would be back in touch within a week. But a week turned into two weeks, which turned into a month, then two months, then OK, you know where Im going with this. So, I enjoyed a good laugh last week while reading an article on the New York Times blog on how Neal Hirschfeld got a would-be employers attention months after an interview and dressed them down for leaving him hanging. His tactic: He emailed to say he was delighted to be joining the team and would report for work bright and early Monday morning. That got their attention in the form of a barrage of urgent email messages and equally urgent messages left on his answering machine. The weird thing is that the employer invited him to apply for the job. Its one thing to get your hopes up unnecessarily; its worse when an employer gives you a pretty clear impression that theyre interested in you, then yanks out the red carpet while youre standing on it.

Cant Get Hired Consider Temp or Contract Work

Can't Get Hired Consider Temp or Contract Work Consider Temp or Contract Work Can't Get Hired Consider Temp or Contract Work If youre out of work and anticipate a long layoff (e.g., more than six months), you may have quite a bit to gain by taking on a temporary or contract job to generate cash to pay the bills while you hunt for full-time work. With the nations unemployment rate at its highest in many years, thousands of out-of-work job seekers are facing or already experiencing many weeks, even months, without a paycheck. Besides the money, contract work also offers these benefits: Youll maintain a semi-regular workday schedule, so returning to full-time work wont be such a jolt; You can make new connections and expand your network of contacts; You might pick up new skills you were seeking anyway; You can add the experience to your resume, and; You might impress them enough that theyll hire you when economic conditions improve. What kind of contract jobs can you find? Theyre popular in information technology, which regularly looks for technical and project management help. Many companies will work with temporary staffing agencies for help in office administration, accounting, and finance. In a recent press release, the specialized staffing firm Robert Half International listed these roles as being among the most prevalent in todays economy: credit and collections specialists, mortgage specialists, help desk and desktop support, bankruptcy/foreclosure attorneys, litigation paralegals, customer service representatives, and administrative healthcare positions. Here are three sites you can use to find listings for contract work: Sologig, Elance, and Guru.com. You can find other sites, as well as links to temp staffing agencies web sites, at CareerOverview.com. PREPARING YOUR RESUME If you're modifying your resume for a particular temporary or contract position, here are three suggestions: Limit your resume to one page that highlights the most essential elements for the job. For instance, a company seeking a web developer probably doesnt need to know about your staff management skills. Headline your resume with a title, such as Experienced IT Project Manager, in place of an Objective or Summary. Then write two or three sentences that summarize your unique expertise and experience that match key phrases in the job description. (If you have a account, see the end of this blog post for instructions on adding a headline to your resume template.) Include a cover letter if youre applying on your own, to express your interest in the position and how you found out about it. For those who look through a staffing agency, the agency acts as a verbal cover letter, explaining your qualifications to their client. BUSINESS CARDS AND NETWORKING Just about every career and job search advisor will tell you that you need to network in person and online to help land that next job. This is especially true for temporary work. For in-person networking, business cards can come in handy. Be sure to include a title on the card that closely matches the one you would use to headline your resume. Also, include your phone numbers and email address, as well as the URL to your web resume or LinkedIn profile, if you have one. You want to give contacts every possible way to find out about you and reach you. Need business cards? Try these sites: VistaPrint, iPrint, and PrintsMadeEasy. HOW TO ADD A HEADLINE USING: First, log into your account and click on My Resumes. Open your resume (or create a new one), then click Headings. In the Custom Heading field, write your title, then click Add Heading. The new heading will show up at the bottom of the Assigned column. Click the up-arrow on the right to move it up to the top position. Delete the heading titled Summary or Objective. Click Save. The title will appear on your resume under your name and contact information. Click Edit under the heading and write the sentences that describe your background and experience that are most pertinent to the position youre applying for.

How to Become a Senior Administrative Assistant

How to Become a Senior Administrative Assistant How to Become a Senior Administrative Assistant With salaries rising for administrative assistant jobs, it's a great time to be an administrative professional. According to the 2019 OfficeTeam Salary Guide, administrative hiring in the U.S. continues to move in a positive direction as companies fill vacancies and add new positions to keep up with rising workloads. And the future is looking bright in terms of salaries, too. An administrative assistant can expect a midpoint salary of $35,750, and with more experience, a senior administrative assistant in the U.S. can expect to earn a midpoint salary of $42,500. Salaries vary widely from city to city. Use our Salary Calculator to find out what senior administrative assistant salaries are offered in your market. So what does it take to move into a senior administrative assistant role? While senior administrative assistants are required to handle much of the same workload as administrative assistants, they must master those tasks before they can take on more advanced duties. In addition, demonstrating an aptitude in three other key areas can help you climb to the next rung on the administrative assistant jobs ladder: 1. Show your support Senior administrative assistants typically support senior-level managers and may supervise other support staff. If you're angling to move into a senior administrative assistant position, be sure to highlight any management experience you've gleaned during your career. Even if you've never supervised a direct report, you've probably served in a leadership role for a special project. Be sure to bring that experience to light - or offer to take on such a project if you still need to develop your management skills. While you may not officially support senior-level managers, chances are you work with them in some capacity, perhaps even filling in when your supervisor is out of the office. If not, offer to pitch in the next time a senior administrative assistant needs help. Not only will you gain valuable experience, but you'll also show initiative and have a chance to shine in front of the executive team. 2. Play up your specialty Senior administrative assistants with specific industry experience are in demand. In fact, many companies pay a premium for an administrative professional with knowledge and experience in their business sector. If you fit this bill, consider leveraging it when applying for a more senior position within your own company. It might give you an edge, even if you're competing with candidates who have more technical, but general, experience. 3. Emphasize your skills Advanced technical skills are critical for senior administrative assistants. Word processing skills are a must, while familiarity with Excel, desktop publishing, website administration and social media are highly desired. It's also important to know your company's proprietary systems or industry-specific software inside and out - and be able to train others to use them. If you need additional technical training, ask your supervisor if you can enroll in an online course. Even if you have to pay for it yourself, it can be a solid investment in your long-term career plan. In addition, senior administrative assistants must exhibit top-notch soft skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills, resiliency in the face of difficulties, initiative, a professional demeanor and leadership abilities. Being organized and managing multiple priorities efficiently is especially critical if you support multiple supervisors, as senior administrative assistants often do. While it can be tricky to prove that you can do a job well if you've never had the chance to play the part, you can find opportunities to demonstrate the skills needed to advance to the next level within your current position. Then, when the time is right, you'll be ready to make your move. Take a look at the available jobs, and if you're interested, send your resume! SENIOR ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT JOBS

Article IV of the Military Code of Conduct

Article IV of the Military Code of Conduct Article IV of the Military Code of Conduct If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way. Article 4 of the Military Code of Conduct  (CoC)  outlines how the U.S. Military expects its officers and enlisted members to behave as a prisoner of war (POW). It reads: Officers and noncommissioned officers shall continue to carry out their responsibilities and exercise their authority in captivity.Informing, or any other action detrimental to a fellow POW, is despicable and is expressly forbidden. POWs especially must avoid helping the enemy to identify fellow POWs who may have knowledge of value to the enemy and who may be made to suffer coercive interrogation.Strong leadership is essential to discipline. Without discipline, camp organization, resistance, and even survival may be impossible. Personal hygiene, camp sanitation, and care of the sick and wounded are imperative.Wherever located, POWs should organize in a military manner under the senior military POW eligible for command. The senior POW (whether officer or enlisted) in the POW camp or among a group of POWs shall assume command according to rank without regard to Military Service. The senior POW cannot evade that responsibility and accountability. When taking command, the senior POW shall inform the other POWs and shall designate the chain of command. If the senior POW is incapacitated, or is otherwise unable to act for any reason, the next senior POW shall assume command.Every effort shall be made to inform all POWs in the camp (or group) of the members of the chain of command who shall represent them in dealing with enemy authorities. The responsibility of subordinates to obey the lawful orders of ranking American military personnel remains unchanged in captivity.U.S. policy on POW camp organization requires that the senior military POW assume command. The Geneva Convention on POWs provides additional guidance to the effect that in POW camps containing only enlisted personnel, a prisoners representative shall be elected.POWs should understand that such an elected representative is regarded by U.S. policy as only a spokesperson for the senior POW. The prisoners representative does not have command, unless the POWs elect the senior POW to be the prisoners representa tive. The senior POW shall assume and retain actual command, covertly if necessary.Maintaining communications is one of the most important ways that POWs aid one another. Communication breaks down the barriers of isolation that an enemy may attempt to construct and helps strengthen a POWs will to resist. Each POW, immediately upon capture, shall try to make contact with fellow POWs by any means available and, thereafter, shall continue to communicate and participate vigorously as part of the POW organization. As with other provisions of the CoC, common sense and the conditions in the POW camp shall determine the way in which the senior POW and the other POWs structure their organization and carry out their responsibilities. What Military Personnel Need to Know  About Article 4 Understand that leadership and obedience to those in command are essential to the discipline required to effect successful organization against captor exploitation. In captivity situations involving two or more POWs, the senior ranking POW shall assume command; all others shall obey the orders and abide by the decisions of the senior POW regardless of differences in Military Service affiliations. Failure to do so shall result in the weakening of organization, a lowering of resistance, and, after repatriation, may result in legal proceedings under the Uniform Code of Military Justice  (UCMJ). Understand that faith, trust, and individual group loyalties have great value in establishing and maintaining an effective POW organization.Understand that a POW who voluntarily informs or collaborates with the captor is disloyal to the United States and fellow POWs and, after repatriation, is subject to disciplinary action under the UCMJ for such actions.Be familiar with the principles of hygiene, sanitation, health maintenance,  first aid, physical conditioning, and food use. It shall include recognition and emergency self-treatment of typical POW camp illnesses by emergency use of primitive materials and available substances (e.g., toothpaste, salt, and charcoal). Such knowledge exerts an important influence on POW ability to resist and assists an effective POW organization. Understand the importance of, and the basic procedures for, establishing secure communications between separated individuals and groups of POWs attempting to establish and maintain an effective organization.Be familiar with the major ethnic (to include racial demographics), cultural and national characteristics of the enemy that may affect POW-captor relationships to the detriment of individual POWs and the POW organization.Understand that an informer or collaborator should be insulated from sensitive information on POW organization, but members of the POW organization should continually encourage and try to persuade the collaborator to cease such activities. Welcoming a repentant collaborator back to the fold is generally a more effective POW organizational approach than continued isolation, which may encourage the collaborator to continue such disloyal conduct.Understand that there is a significant difference between the collaborator who must be persuaded to return and the resister who, only after having been physically or mentally tortured, complies with a captors improper demand (such as to provide information or a propaganda statement). The collaborators conduct is reprehensible and cannot be sanctioned, whereas the resistor should be given help to gather strength and resume resistance. Understand that in situations where military and civilian personnel are imprisoned together, the senior military POW should make every effort to persuade civilian prisoners that the  Military Service  members assuming overall command leadership of the entire prisoner group, based upon experience and specific training, is advantageous to the entire prisoner community.Understand the need for, and the mechanics of, establishing an effective covert organization in situations where the captor attempts to prevent or frustrate a properly constituted organization. Special Provisions for Medical Personnel Chaplains Medical personnel shall not assume command over nonmedical personnel and chaplains shall not assume command over military personnel of any branch. Military Service regulations that restrict  the eligibility  of  those  personnel for command shall be explained to all personnel at an applicable level of understanding to preclude later confusion in a POW camp. Top 10 Reasons You Didnt Get a Raise

Top 10 Reasons You Didn't Get a Raise Top 10 Reasons You Didn't Get a Raise Was your request for a raise declined? There are many reasons why your employer may not have given you a raise, including performance-related concerns, the timing, and style of your request, or the companys general financial health. Find out ten of the most common roadblocks preventing you from getting a raise. Possible Reasons Why You Didnt Get That Raise Poor Timing: While its not a marriage proposal, asking for a raise is an important question. Timing is key! Did you request a raise in June, when the general company policy is to make decisions at the end of the year? Maybe you asked too early in your tenure or made your request soon after the company had a recall, poor quarterly report, or other bad news. Thats not the only timing problem: while your managers bad day shouldnt affect your raise, a meeting scheduled on a stressful day could be the reason your request was turned down.Next Steps: Ask human resources or co-workers when raises are typically given out and time your meeting for a low-stress time of day and week. Lack of Company Resources: Sometimes, the reason you dont get a raise isnt related to you at all. Its quite possible that your company isnt flush with money, and simply doesnt have room in the budget to give you a raise.Next Steps: How important is the raise to you? And does it seem as though the company finances will turn around? The answer to these questions will determine if you stay put, or use this as a cue to begin a job search.Your Performance Needs Improvement: Are you exceeding expectations, or simply doing the work outlined in your job description? At many jobs, in order to get a raise, employees need to go above and beyond the basic requirements. If your work is competent, but not stellar, this may be why you didnt get the raise.Next Steps: Talk to your manager about what shed like to see from you. Consider how to transform from an ordinary employee into an exceptional one. Keep a list of your big accomplishments, and any praise you receive, and highlight them the next tim e you request a raise. Your Boss Doesnt Know About Your Accomplishments: On a day-to-day basis at work, do you trumpet every accomplishment, even the most banal? Or, conversely, are you quiet about your triumphs? You should offer evidence for why youre deserving of a raise at the moment when you make the request, but also lay the groundwork in advance. While its good to be self-promoting, be cautious about excessive self-promotion, or stealing the spotlight from deserving co-workers, which can work against your request.Next Steps: In one-on-one meetings with your manager, and over email, highlight your accomplishments. Be careful not to overdo: you want to be neither overly modest nor overly boastful. You Ask for Personal Reasons: For most companies, salary is an unemotional calculation, based on the employees qualifications, geographic considerations, and competition. If you asked for a raise citing factors in your personal life -  increased rent, family-related concerns, etc. -  instead of professional reasons, your manager may feel sympathetic. But thats doesnt mean youve presented a valid argument for a higher salary. The same logic applies to requests based on a co-workers salary.Next Steps: Frame your raise ask around the value you provide to the company - rather than detailing your own expenses and needs, point to ways youve saved money or added to the companys revenue. Skipping the Prep Work: Wearing unprofessional clothes, and giving a disjointed, rambling, or off-the-cuff rationale for your raise does not impress. Even if your company doesnt have much of a dress code, its still important to look and act professionally at this moment.Next Steps: Plan talking points, and rehearse ahead of time. Dress to impress: this is a good excuse to break out your interview outfit.Youre a Difficult Employee: Sounds harsh, but if youre a challenge to work with, a downer in meetings, or a frequent complainer, you may be a problem for your manager, making him or her unwilling to make the case to superiors that you deserve a raise.Next Steps: Evaluate your attitude. How do you present yourself in meetings and everyday occasions around the office? Consider if your complaints and critiques are overshadowing your good work. Employers Fear a Wave of Requests: Many companies can be fearful of giving out raises, since granting one request could lead to others.Next Steps: This puts you in a tough position. You can mention that youll be discrete about your raise, and also make the point that your raise should be evaluated on its own merits. However, if this is the response you get, it may be a sign that its a good time to kick off a job search.Your Salary Is Already Market-Standard: If you didnt do research as to the typical salary range for your position before requesting a raise, your manager may deny the request, reasoning that youre already getting the amount you deserve.Next Steps: Do some salary research, at sites such as Glassdoor.com, Payscale.com, or Salary.com, and take a look at the data on average page raises so you know what you can expect. You Didnt Ask!: While its certainly possible that a raise will appear in your paycheck before you request it, thats not often going to be the case. If you feel that you are deserving of a raise, ask for it.Next Steps: Learn how to request a pay raise, and schedule some time with your manager. What to Do When You Dont Get a Raise Lets start with what not to do: unless you have another secure job offer waiting for you, its probably wise to avoid  quitting  in a huff. (In fact, think carefully before quitting dramatically even if you  do  have an offer.) Dont get personal or insulting in your response: sometimes managers or companies are under constraints. State your objections to the decision professionally. As well, dont change your day-to-day work habits in the weeks and months following your raise request being turned down. Being frustrated by the decision doesnt negate your responsibilities to the job. Gossiping with co-workers, slowing down work, or having a bad attitude will not endear you to colleagues or managers, and could endanger future requests. Evaluate Your Own Request: Its not easy to ask for a raise - even if you put in solid prep work, its possible you could have timed your request better or phrased it more effectively. Consider how you made the request, and review some of the  common reasons companies decline raise requests, many of which are totally unrelated to your performance.Use the Feedback: Treat the feedback you received from your manager or human resources about why your raise request was declined as a blueprint for your next steps. If you did not receive helpful feedback, schedule a time to meet again. Ask direct questions, about what types of benchmarks youd need to meet to get a raise. You can also request a timeline, or schedule a follow-up meeting. Ask questions non-confrontationally: your goal here is to get practical information about why you did not get a raise and where you need to improve.   Consider Your Next Goal: As you evaluate the feedback you received, consider what next steps youd like to take. If you feel that you will not receive a raise, and deserve one, starting a search for a new job might be your next step. Or, you might want to establish a timeline for when to ask for a raise again.Switch Strategies and Seek Non-Salary Benefits: A raise isnt the only way to get ahead at work. You can also request a  bonus  in lieu of a raise, or additional  vacation days. Or, consider non-financial benefits, such as being able to work from home a day a week, or reimbursement for work-related classes or training.
